Preparations
Break 9 inches of cinnamon sticks into small pieces. Add those pieces to a spice grinder along with 12 whole cloves and 12 star anise pods. Grind until the spices are fine, about 1 minute. Add the ground spices to a saucepan over medium heat and toast until they are aromatic, shaking the pan continually. Add 2 cups of Simple Syrup, bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Strain before using or storing.
Place 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan and bring it to boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove the pan from heat and let the syrup cool completely before using or storing.
Method
- Add everything except the orange zest to a mixing glass, fill it two-thirds with ice, and stir for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Strain over one large ice cube into the rocks glass, express the orange zest over the cocktail, and discard the zest.
- Garnish with the orange slice.
