A promotion
For most of cocktail history, liqueurs were supporting cast, essential but treated as too one-note to carry a drink alone. That's changed. There's something genuinely appealing about a cocktail that leads with the complexity of an amaro, the bitter citrus bite of Campari, or the vegetal, herbaceous, almost tobacco-like character of Chartreuse.
Why it works
Not every drink built on these will suit every palate, but there's one in here for anyone. Their real gift is that they force a pause. They make you notice something you'd normally breeze past, some quality that was always there, just crowded out. Handled well, they let you appreciate a flavor more fully than a conventional build ever would.
